The Tournament’s Background

Since 2013, the Caribbean Premier League has been held yearly in the West Indies. One team no longer exists after participating in the tournament for seven years.

There have been three different champions in the last eight seasons. For the first time in the history of the competition, a Caribbean team (the Trinbago Knight Riders, formerly known as Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel) has won four times. The reigning champions are the Trinbago Knight Riders.

Tournament Format

Six teams from the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will compete in a double round-robin league stage: Trinbago Knight Riders, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Barbados Royals, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, Jamaica Tallawahs, and Saint Lucia Kings.

Prior to reaching the semifinals, each team will face off against the other twice. There will be a first-and-fourth-semifinal matchup, followed by a matchup between the second and third-ranked clubs. After the second semi-final, the Final will be contested a few days later. All 33 Twenty20 matches will be held in Saint Kitts and Nevis.

The Trinbago Knight Riders have won the CPL four times, making them the most successful franchise in the competition’s history. The St Lucia Stars (formerly known as the St Lucia Zouks) have underperformed when it comes to the bottom rung of the ladder.

The Jamaica Tallawahs and Barbados Tridents are the other champions. Even though the Guyana Amazon Warriors have consistently put up a strong show, their four appearances in the finals have ended in defeat.

The Saint Lucia Kings and St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots both won dramatic semi-final matches to advance to the Hero Caribbean Premier League final.

The Patriots defeated the Guyana Amazon Warriors by seven wickets, while the Kings beat the defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders by 21 runs to reach their second consecutive final.

The New England Patriots won the coin toss and elected to start the game on the field. Shimron Hetmyer (45 not out) helped his team to a large total of 178/9 despite the Warriors getting off to a good start with the bat.

When it came time for the Patriots’ chase, they once again went with Chris Gayle (42), who set the tone for a successful pursuit by repeatedly launching the ball into the stands until Evin Lewis (77 not out) took over and led his team to a crushing win.

Chandrapaul Hemraj and Shoaib Malik steadied the ship after the Warriors lost Brandon King in the fourth over of their innings, as the Warriors built on their solid foundation.

The team collapsed to 131-8 after losing three wickets in three overs, including captain Nicholas Pooran’s.

The Patriots had two outstanding spinners in Jon-Russ Jaggesar (2/19) and Fawad Ahmed (2/22). After that, Hetmyer came through with flying colours, scoring 45 runs off just 20 balls, including a stunning 25 runs off the final over of the innings to keep the game alive.

After six overs, the Patriots had a 68-run lead. Gayle was on fire, blasting 42 off 27 balls, and once he was bowled, Lewis stepped up to lead the charge in the hunt for the victory.

Lewis scored an undefeated 77 off 39 balls, assisted by captain Dwayne Bravo, as the Patriots romped to victory with 13 balls remaining.

The Kings won the toss and elected to bat in the other semi-final. Tim David (38) and David Wiese (34) wreaked havoc in the later overs after Mark Deyal (78) got the team off to a fast start. This helped the team reach a whopping 205/4 in their 20 overs.

In response, Knight Riders made a fast start but fell apart as the run rate grew. Wiese (5/39) recorded his second five-wicket haul of the CPL this year, ending Knight Riders’ title defence as they concluded on 184 for eighteen in the final.
